It secures a priority date. You then have twelve months to file the complete specification, during which you can continue developing and can describe the invention as patent pending.
Computer programmes as such are excluded under section 3(k) of the Patents Act. An invention with a demonstrable technical effect beyond the programme itself may be patentable, but the exclusion is applied strictly and the assessment is specific to the facts.
